R.I.P.
This is an odd addition to my page - a Rest In Peace page, dedicated to people who have died recently that really affected me, each for their own reason.
- Capt. Tom Nichols and Capt. Harold Lessard, members of the Winnipeg Fire Department who both worked with my dad. “You go in to fight a fire, and unfortunately two of the best guys you could ever meet didn’t make it out,” (Alex Forrest, president of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg to CTV in article available here) Firefighters are regular, everyday men and women who start each day not knowing what to expect. Their days may bring nothing but false calls or minor incidents; but some are fateful days in the lives of others, days that live in their minds forever. Without hesitation these men and women do everything they can, in this case to ensure the house was empty of occupants. They passed on nobily and honourably, losing their lives doing the work of virtue.
- My Aunty Rosie who passed away so suddenly in the beginning of November, on the night of All Saints’ Day - apparently her time was up and they came to bring her to my Uncle Ron, her husband, her passed away early 2006. It was a tragedy that struck our family - though, like all tragedies, it also brought us all together.
- “Scotty“, from the original Star Trek series. He played a classic character and because I am especially fond of Star Trek, I was devasted to hear he had died.
- Steve Irwin, “Crocidile Hunter”. Just heard that he died today (4 Sept 06) - I think that, just like many others, I thought he was invincible, or that perhaps some of his stunts were staged. Apparently not. My heart goes out to his wife and children, and yet it seems fitting that he went doing what he loved best - which is what he wanted.
- Arthur C. Clarke. That visionary science fiction writer, author of 2001 & 2010…RIP
